“Christmas in San Francisco”
Christmas: part celebration for the birthday of the Christian Messiah, part business holiday for improving the economy, part pagan ritual for the winter solstice. Take your pick and you are sure to find examples on any downtown street corner in San Francisco during the last frenzied days leading up to Christmas.
I spent the last couple of weekends documenting the different threads of this holiday: a time for street merchants and performers to show off their wares for the throngs of shoppers, a time for the businesses to transform themselves into cathedrals of light and, most important of all, a time to ask Santa for that extra special gift. The only problem is… trying to get through the god-awful line!
Here then is San Francisco at its best and its worst.
